I want to use my own modem. What requirements does it need to meet?
If you’re bringing your own modem to the party, just make sure it checks a few important boxes first:
- DOCSIS 3.1 certification: A non-negotiable for accessing modern “OFDM” channels used for our 1 Gig service, and helps keep your setup future-ready.
- 32x8 channel bonding: Allows the modem to use 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels at once, so you get a more stable connection.
- **IPv6 support: **Ensures the modem can communicate with the modern internet and provides better long-term security.
- **Active Queue Management (AQM): **Fancy name, must-have feature. Reduces “lag” or “latency” during high-bandwidth activities.
- Ethernet port speed: A standard 1 Gbps port will work, but a 2.5 Gbps (multi-gig) port is highly recommended to prevent future bottlenecks.
Save yourself the headache: Some gateways from other providers might look compatible, but aren’t built to work with welo internet—especially older models with phone/VoIP jacks.
