# I want to use my own modem. What requirements does it need to meet?

If you’re bringing your own modem to the party, just make sure it checks a few important boxes first:

* **DOCSIS 3.1 certification:** A non-negotiable for accessing modern “OFDM” channels used for our 1 Gig service,  and helps keep your setup future-ready.
* **32x8 channel bonding**: Allows the modem to use 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels at once, so you get a more stable connection.
* **IPv6 support:** Ensures the modem can communicate with the modern internet and provides better long-term security.
* **Active Queue Management (AQM)**: Fancy name, must-have feature. Reduces “lag” or “latency” during high-bandwidth activities.
* **Ethernet port speed:** A standard 1 Gbps port will work, but a 2.5 Gbps (multi-gig) port is highly recommended to prevent future bottlenecks.

**Save yourself the headache:** Some gateways from other providers might look compatible, but aren’t built to work with welo internet—especially older models with phone/VoIP jacks.
